On occasion, usually during times of corporate stress or when high levels of change are occurring, the “calibre” of people can be drawn into question. “Calibre” is one of those deeply meaningful management metaphors that hides its completely subjective nature and is often regarded as a binary switch or a gauge. In the long run; someone either has the calibre or they don’t.

Morale is the de facto measure of corporate contentment it would seem, often featuring in weekly meetings as an agenda item and cited in “Company of The Year” awards as a key indicator.  But what is morale and is there anything you can do to keep it high and buoyant?

I have an  unusually “glass half empty” theory about morale and that is that it is an indicator in a process which is actually pretty much the same for all people.  That is a gradual decline from the heady first few days in a new job to the gut wrenching day someone decides to move on to a new role.

del.icio.us is not a new, or original service but it is a popular one, with hundreds of thousands of ordinary people sharing their surfing habits. In a Project Office context this offers an opportunity for centralising del.icio.us bookmarks, subscriptions and even networks. One delicious account, many browsers using that account (i.e. identically configured browser buttons) to tag sites. As the “tag cloud” expands, so does the capability for knowledge transfer amongst the participating members or project team.

That same “tag cloud” can now be included in a more central location, using their “tag cloud” snippet offerings, either on a departmental or wider business basis. Obviously there is the “public” apsect, but with “private saving”, del.icio.us can hide the things that might not be suitable to share. Going further, the account can also include all internal, local resources to ensure new team members can get up to speed quickly. The subscriptions feature in del.icio.us also allows for pertinent “feeds” of data into the group to help further promote new ideas and divesity.

As one of many available “web 2.0″ services, del.icio.us can be used to great effect for very little effort, bringing collaboration, idea exchange and outloook to a project or programme team .
